The Psychology of Same Sex Weddings
In the early days, it was a scrappy attempt and heartfelt appeal to get wedding professionals, wholesalers, and the mainstream industry to hear our message. "Gay and lesbian couples need help, too," said my straight mom and company founder, Gretchen Hamm.
Two thousand thirteen has been a very big year for marriage equality. A very big year, indeed!
While still basking in the afterglow of the recent news of Supreme Court victories for California (where marriage equality was restored) and at the federal level (where section 3 of DOMA was found unconstitutional), the LGBTQ community received news today of one more milestone to celebrate.

June 26, 2013 is an historic day!
The "Defense of Marriage Act" has been found unconstitutional. Prop 8 was dismissed on standing, meaning that the lower court rulings will stand and marriage equality will return to California!
GayWeddings.com would like to aknowledge its visionary leader, straight mom, Gretchen Hamm, who founded this company believing that same-sex couples deserve equal support and equal rights!
I get choked up every time I see this ad.
It's a beautiful story about one particular father and daughter, but it's also a story which many gay grooms and lesbian brides share with their parents. Not all. But, many. And increasingly more as marriage equality takes hold.
Here's to the many parents who continue to let their love for their children guide their hearts with openness. We are changing this world, one wedding at a time!
Introduction By Kathryn Hamm
We are quickly entering the era of widespread "choice" in wedding planning options for same-sex couples, and we are thrilled that more companies are coming to realize (as I believe they should) that the wedding market is one diverse market and the LGBT community should be embraced and included as one segment with in it.
Dear Mr. President,
My toddler son met you in Iowa in 2007 at Tom Harkin’s Annual Steak Fry. You were greeting Iowans at the fence and came over to say hello to my family. You asked me and my partner, knowingly, if we were his parents and we said yes. You nodded and took our son in your arms. You both regarded each other, and, with a broad smile, you said, sincerely and warmly, “He’s beautiful.”
I'll be writing more about this soon but wanted to post our very public "Thank You" to President Obama for his support of same-sex couples and marriage equality.
It's the best Mother's Day present my mother (who founded our company) and I could receive!
If you haven't heard his remarks you can watch them here.
ABC's Rick Klein reports:
In 1995, my partner and I had begun to talk more seriously about having a commitment ceremony. We didn't yet know what that would look like or how we would ever pull it off, but we had begun to embrace the idea that we would exchange vows in front of our friends & family. And, in those days, a decision like this wasn't as commonplace or widely embraced as it is today.
At a risk of feeling a bit like I’ve just posted my most sensational headline yet, I do feel compelled to share my perspective on the frequently appearing storyline that, any time a state legalizes same-sex marriage, there will be a huge gold rush and money falling from the skies as gay and lesbian couples rush to the altar, chuppah or City Hall to tie the knot or jump the broom.
